Yeah. So I guess I slept through an earthquake that happened at about 5:30 this morning. It was a 5.2 on the Richter scale and originated about 100 miles away from my town, and apparently I was the only one who didn't notice it. What the hell?

One of the things that really helps me when I'm trying to draw things from real life is to pay attention to their outlines rather than what's actually inside the shapes. I'm sure if you've ever taken an art class where you've had to do a still-life, your teacher has told you to break down the object you're drawing into abstract shapes instead of thinking of it as a vase or a seashell or a nose or whatever. It's important advice but it's still kind of vague, and the way I've found that works out for me is by focusing on outlines. I don't know about you, but I'm a very math-oriented person, so when I can simplify everything into outlines it makes things a lot easier for me. Instead of thinking things like, "This nose looks too crooked," I can instead think things like, "Oh, the line that forms the bridge of this nose should be about 30 degrees from the vertical instead of 45 degrees the way it is now." By paying attention to the angles lines make with each other and comparing lengths of lines, I can usually get pretty good proportions the first time I draw something.
Another thing to keep the proportions in your drawing similar to the real thing is by paying attention to the shape of the negative space, or the part of the drawing that's empty space (as opposed to the space that's filled by the object you're drawing). A lot of people get entirely hung up on what their positive space should look like because it's the focus of their drawing, but it's really easy to compromise the silhouette of whatever you're drawing that way. It's a lot easier to draw negative space because it's usually a very abstract shape, and thus easier to mentally break down into its components.
I know that you want to draw stuff from your imagination and you don't really have any reference pictures to draw from, but drawing from real life is the fastest way I know of to get yourself to the point where you actually can draw from your imagination and not be totally frustrated with yourself because your drawing looks like crap.
As for stuff besides anatomy... Personally, I've so been focused on getting my anatomy correct for most of my drawing career (which I still fail horribly at, lol) that I can't really give a whole lot of advice about image composition, color theory, or other stuff like that. I'm still trying to get the hang of things in those areas. x_x
I hope that helps a little bit. x_x; If you're confused about anything, feel free to ask me to clarify. I'm not a very clear writer most of the time, lol.
You say you want to "draw to preserve some memories of mine" - does this mean you'll be working from photographic references or just from your memories from events in general? I can give you some suggestions on either one, but before I start talking my head off it'd be good to find out what's relevant to you.
Best of luck to you on your drawing endeavors!
Anyways I just wanted to pen out a quick thank you for taking the time to create a tutorial...
I never really expected that I would ever need to be able to put pencil to paper in the way that ya'll seem to be able to do but I guess that just goes to show that you can't predict life...
Anyways I am trying to learn how to draw to preserve some memories of mine, so if you could give any advice to a beginner I would appreciate it.

92% percent of the teen population would be dead if Abercrombie and Fitch said it wasn't cool to breathe anymore. Repost this if you are one of the 8% who would be laughing your ass off.
